3D-printed dental crowns

When we make your customised 3D-printed dental crown, we use a range of advanced tools and technologies. We begin with an intraoral scanner, which we use to capture detailed data about your oral anatomy. Then, we transform this into a digital 3D model which we use to design your custom dental crown. This uniquely personalised dental crown design is then precisely fabricated with our 3D printer, resulting in a durable and natural-looking restoration which exactly matches your needs.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a prosthetic cap or covering that is placed over a damaged, decayed or weakened tooth. The primary purpose of a dental crown is to restore the tooth’s shape, size, strength and overall appearance. It encases the visible portion of the tooth above the gum line, effectively becoming the new outer surface of the tooth.

Am I suitable for a dental crown?

Dental crowns are commonly used to address dental problems, including:

  • Decayed or damaged teeth
  • Weak or fractured teeth
  • Cosmetic improvements (discoloured or uneven)
  • Protection after root canal treatment
  • Support for dental bridges
  • Restoration of dental implants

To determine if you are suitable for dental crowns, consult with our skilled cosmetic dentists. We will evaluate your oral health, discuss your treatment options and recommend the most effective procedure based on your needs.

Why should I consider 3D printing for dental crowns?

Choosing 3D printing for dental crowns can offer many different advantages for you, enhancing your overall dental experience. Here are some reasons why you might consider 3D-printed dental crowns:

  • Precision and accuracy: 3D printing technology allows for highly accurate and precise dental crown fabrication. This means that the crown will fit your tooth perfectly, reducing the risk of complications and ensuring a comfortable and secure fit.
  • Faster turnaround time: Compared to traditional crown fabrication methods, 3D printing significantly reduces the time required to produce dental crowns. In many cases, you can receive your crown within a single appointment, making it a convenient option, especially for those in need of urgent treatment.
  • Customisation: 3D printing enables a high level of customisation. We can tailor the size, shape and colour of the crown to match your existing teeth, resulting in a natural-looking smile that meets your preferences.
  • Durability and strength: Modern 3D-printed crowns are made from durable materials, ensuring they can withstand the biting forces and acidic environment of the mouth. The precision of 3D printing also reduces weak points, enhancing the overall strength of the crown.
  • Comfort: Thanks to the precise fit achieved with 3D printing, patients often experience increased comfort with 3D-printed dental crowns. The even distribution of biting forces minimises pressure points, and the smoother finish reduces irritation to surrounding tissues.
  • Efficient curing: With 3D printing, the curing process is efficiently controlled. The crown is cured using UV light, ensuring thorough and precise solidification of the material, contributing to its overall strength and durability.
  • Improved aesthetics: 3D printing allows for the creation of aesthetically pleasing dental crowns. The digital design and customisation ensure that the crown seamlessly integrates with adjacent teeth, enhancing the overall appearance of your smile.

How are 3D-printed crowns made?

Scanning

The process begins with an intraoral scan of your mouth. Instead of traditional putty impressions, we take a high-resolution digital scan using an intraoral scanner. This scan captures detailed images of your dental anatomy and tooth preparation.

Designing

We import the digital scan into our digital modelling software (e.g., exocad). In this step, we meticulously design your crown, considering factors like bite alignment, adjacent teeth and aesthetics. Our digital design ensures a precise fit and accurate form and structure for your dental crown.

Setting up the 3D printer

Next, we send the digital design to our 3D printer. Before printing, we prepare the printer by loading a specific resin and setting up the printing parameters.

Printing

The printer begins building your crown layer by layer. The printing time can vary but is generally relatively quick compared to traditional methods. Our advanced 3D printers can achieve high levels of precision, often printing within microns to meet accuracy requirements.

Post-processing

After the printing is complete, we remove your printed crown from the build platform. Your crown undergoes a thorough cleaning process, often involving washing with isopropyl alcohol to remove any excess resin. We then cure the cleaned crown using a UV light source to solidify and enhance its physical properties.

Finishing

We carefully remove the printing supports or structures that anchored your crown during the printing process. Your 3D-printed crown undergoes additional finishing steps, refining its surface and edges to ensure a perfect fit and appearance.

Final inspection & curing

We inspect the finished crown for accuracy and quality, making any necessary adjustments. A final curing step is performed to further enhance the crown’s strength and durability.

Fitting and bonding

Before bonding your crown, we test it in your mouth to ensure a proper fit. The inner surface of the crown, known as the intaglio, may undergo sandblasting, cleaning and the application of a coupling agent before we initiate the bonding process.
