Sleep Apnoea Treatment

Breathe easier, sleep better

Revitalise your nights with our custom-fitted sleep apnoea solutions.

Do you wake fully refreshed, or could your oral health be causing sleep-related fatigue?

You may know that the sound of loud snoring can indicate conditions that impact your sleep quality. However, you might not know that discussing this with your dental professional can help you get a great night’s sleep every night.

Unobstructed airflow is crucial to smooth breathing during sleep, as this allows ample oxygen intake necessary for lung function. This, in turn, allows optimal respiration to happen, which supports your body’s metabolism and leaves you feeling refreshed upon waking rather than still tired.

Find out how Dental Paradiso can help you.

Dental Paradiso understands that sleep disorders like sleep apnoea can be significantly influenced by oral health. Comprehensive dental check-ups and effective sleep apnoea treatments are crucial parts of the integrative approach we take with our patients. To help you achieve sleep which is truly restful, you may benefit from a custom-made dental appliance tailored to match your unique needs, helping you breathe easier at night.

Sleep apnoea

Sleep apnoea is a sleep disorder characterised by interruptions in breathing during sleep. These interruptions can be caused by different factors, including oral health issues, lifestyle choices, obesity and family history. Our team recognises the value in educating patients on things they can do themselves to improve their oral health and overall wellbeing, so let your dental professional know if you are feeling concerned about sleep apnoea.

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)

Obstructive sleep apnoea, the most prevalent type, occurs when throat muscles excessively relax during sleep, leading to a blocked airway and breathing interruptions. This condition, marked by loud snoring and choking sounds, results from the narrowed or closed airway, causing fragmented sleep patterns and preventing deeper, more restorative sleep stages.

Untreated, OSA can contribute to daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and escalate to cardiovascular issues.

The link between oral health and sleep apnoea

One of the often-overlooked causes of obstructive sleep apnoea is related to oral health. When the muscles and soft tissues in your throat and mouth relax too much during sleep, they can partially or completely block your airway. This can lead to the characteristic pauses in breathing that are associated with sleep apnoea.

Dental check-up and sleep apnoea screening

Regular dental check-ups at Dental Paradiso are not just about maintaining your beautiful smile; they are also an opportunity to screen for potential sleep apnoea risk factors. During your check-up, our experienced dentists will:

  • Perform a thorough examination of your oral cavity.
  • Look for signs of oral health issues that may contribute to sleep apnoea, such as a small jaw or large tonsils.
  • Evaluate your dental hygiene practices, as poor dental hygiene can also exacerbate sleep apnoea symptoms.

If our dental team suspects that your oral health may be contributing to sleep apnoea, we will recommend further diagnostic testing and treatment options.

Experience better sleep with a mandibular advancement device (MAD)

At Dental Paradiso, we offer an effective solution to help you sleep better and wake up refreshed with the use of a mandibular advancement device (MAD).

What are mandibular advancement devices (MADs)?

Mandibular Advancement Devices, commonly referred to as MADs, are medical devices designed to alleviate snoring and manage mild to moderate forms of obstructive sleep apnoea. These devices are typically worn as mouthpieces during your nighttime slumber. Resembling sports mouthguards in appearance, MADs are comfortable to wear, especially when they are custom-made and expertly fitted by your dentist.

How do MADs improve sleep?

MADs enhance the quality of your sleep by effectively keeping your airway unobstructed. This prevents shallow breathing and potential oxygen shortages that can disrupt your sleep and have adverse effects on your body’s vital organs. When a MAD is properly fitted, it repositions your jaw, stabilises jaw muscles and joints, and promotes improved airflow as you breathe throughout the night. These devices prevent the jaw from sliding backward over your airway, ensuring uninterrupted airflow. Typically, an adjustment of the jaw forward by 8-10 mm is sufficient to maintain adequate airflow for most individuals.

How do MADs work?

MADs function by advancing the lower jaw (mandible) forward when worn, effectively widening the airway. This forward repositioning prevents the vibrations associated with snoring, which often result from a blocked or obstructed airway. With an unobstructed airway, you can maximise the amount of air you inhale with each breath, leading to improved sleep quality. It is a straightforward and effective solution for addressing snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea.
