Digital and physical dental models
Experience your future smile with our advanced smile design mock-up
A smile design mock-up visually represents a patient’s envisioned smile after cosmetic dental treatment. At Dental Paradiso, we use intraoral scanners and 3D printing to create digital and physical models.
Using this valuable tool, our team and patients are able to visualise and assess potential outcomes before committing to permanent changes. Communication regarding expectations for different dental procedures is thereby enhanced, as patients get a tangible understanding of expected the results for:
What is a smile design?
Smile design is the process of improving the aesthetic and function of your smile—whether that means whiter, straighter, or more balanced teeth through cosmetic dental treatments. It’s a personalised approach that considers your facial features, personality and preferences to create a custom smile that fits you.
It’s usually done over two visits, where you’ll actually get to see and try on your new smile before we make anything permanent.
The goal of smile design is to enhance the visual appeal of your smile and address functional problems that may impact oral health. This may include:
- Missing teeth
- Worn or damaged teeth
- Misaligned or crooked teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Uneven gumline
- Tooth stains and discolouration
- Malocclusion or bad bite
- TMJ disorders

Smile try in
A smile try in allow patients to wear a printed shell of the final design to allow for live smile transformation. This can be used as a template for final veneer design, ensuring precise conversion into final veneers. Clinical scenarios may vary and feasibility will need to be assessed at consultation.
What is a dental mock-up?
A dental mock-up is a temporary or provisional representation of a planned dental restoration or treatment. It can take the form of either a digital or a physical model.
In a digital mock-up, advanced smile design software is used to create a virtual simulation of the proposed dental work. This allows for a detailed preview of the expected results.
On the other hand, a physical mock-up involves the creation of a tangible, non-permanent replica using materials like dental resin or wax.
Why does it matter?
Both digital and physical mock-ups serve the purpose of providing dentists and patients with a visual and tactile preview of the intended changes to the teeth and overall smile. This preview helps in assessing the aesthetics, fit and functionality of the proposed treatment before the actual dental work is initiated. It allows for adjustments and refinements to be made, ensuring that the final results meet the expectations of both the dental professional and the patient.
Steps for making digital design mock-up
Consultation
During consultation, we discuss your dental goals and preferences. You share what features of your smile you’d like to improve, such as the colour, shape, size or alignment of your teeth.
Digital design
Using the digital impressions, we create a 3D model of your teeth. This digital model serves as the basis for planning and visualising the proposed changes to your smile. It allows us to manipulate and customise the digital model based on your preferences.
Try your new smile
You have the opportunity to visually assess and “try on” your new smile using the mock-up. This step is crucial for you to see how the planned changes will look on your actual teeth. It provides a realistic preview, and any adjustments can be made based on your feedback.
Digital impressions
We use advanced intraoral scanners to take precise digital impressions of your teeth. This process is comfortable and provides us with highly detailed digital images of your oral structures.
Mock-up fabrication & fitting
The digital 3D model guides the 3D printer to create a physical model. A silicone impression is taken from the printed model, filled with quick-setting polymer. You’ll bite down until it hardens, providing temporary prototype teeth to preview proposed changes.
Begin dental work
Once you are satisfied with the mock-up, we proceed to the actual dental work. This could involve procedures like veneers, teeth whitening, orthodontics or other cosmetic treatments. The mock-up serves as a guide for implementing the agreed-upon changes, ensuring that the final result aligns with your expectations.
