What is the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)?
Medicare’s CDBS program was created to help families afford essential dental care for their children. Promoting excellent oral health habits from a young age, it provides financial coverage for a range of preventive and restorative dental services.

What’s not covered by the CDBS
The CDBS does not cover orthodontic or cosmetic dental work, nor dental services provided in hospitals.

Is your child eligible for the CDBS?
To be eligible for free dental care with CDBS, your child must:
1. Be aged 0 to 17 years for at least one day of the calendar year.
2. Be eligible for Medicare on the day of service.
3. Receive, or be part of a family receiving, certain Australian Government payments.
You can check your child’s eligibility online by signing in to myGov or calling the Medicare line at 132 011, which is available 24/7.
How the CDBS benefit cap works
The benefit cap is the maximum amount of dental benefits an eligible child can use over two years. The two-year period starts the year the child first receives a dental service. For example, if the first service is on 1 March 2025, the two-year period includes all of 2025 and 2026. During this time, eligible children can receive up to $1,132 in dental benefits.
If the child is still eligible after the two years, they can access a new benefit cap.
You have flexibility in using your benefits:
Examples
Partial use: If a child uses $650 of their benefits in 2025, they can use the remaining $482 in 2026 if
still eligible.
Full use: If a child uses the full $1,132 benefit cap in 2025, they will have to wait until 2027 to access a new benefit cap.
